Not your average book club, Fit Lit is a monthly group blog about compact and remarkable works of fiction that inspire or move us. From short stories, novellas, and poems to podcast readings and online performances, we take on any powerfully efficient prose with gusto and glee.
Here's how it works: each month, one member of our group selects a classic or contemporary work of short fiction for the group to explore. We spend the first two weeks of the month reading or otherwise experiencing the selected work, and then spend the latter half of the month in collective dialogue, sharing what we took away and getting down to the business of works and what doesn't.

From the November 2009 selection, “Childcare”
"The woman closed the heavy oak door behind me, and I stamped my feet on the braided rug I was standing on, to shake off the snow. I started to take off my shoes. “Oh, you don’t have to take off your shoes,” she said. “There’s too much of that prissy Japanese stuff going on in this town. Bring in the mud.” She smiled—big, theatrical, a little crazy. I had forgotten her name and was hoping she’d say it soon; if she didn’t, she might not say it at all." — Lorrie Moore

What folks are saying about Fit Lit
"Many thanks for the positive feedback. I’m thrilled that the Angell/Updike podcast triggered a lengthy, inspiring discussion [at Fit Lit]. I couldn’t hope for anything more when planning and taping." — Deborah Treisman, Fiction Editor at The New Yorker
